Our skin is a treasure that needs protection. Whether you are on a holiday or you are just going out for running errands you will need some sun protection. Every summer, the heat burns up our faces and overexposure leads to tanning and sunburns. UVA and UVB Rays

What does SPF mean?

SPF (Sun protection factor) is a relative measure of how long a sunscreen will protect you from ultraviolet (UV) B rays.  Rated on a scale from 2 to 50+ (the higher the number, the stronger the protection), it tells you how much longer your skin will take to turn red in response to UVB. Dermatologists recommend using a sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30, which blocks 97% of the sun’s UVB rays.

However, not all sunscreen would suit every skin type and thus, it is not advisable to buy a sunscreen randomly.

Also, ensure that the SPF level of the sunscreen is high.

For acne-prone skin, the sunscreen needs to be chosen very wisely. Any cream with harsh ingredients can cause a lot of damage. Thus, go for the one that is not greasy and odourless. The ones with the written message of “non-comedogenic” or “won’t clog pores” are the right creams for you.

3.For Dry Skin

Those who have oily skin needs a sunscreen with light and non-greasy formula that can blend in the skin easily and avoids clogging the pores. If the level of oil in your skin is too much, choose the matte finish cream as it helps look the skin smooth rather than oily.

5. For Fair Skin

For a fair skin tone, it is recommended that you use a sunscreen with broad spectrum and high SPF content. The minimum advisable level is SPF 30 but it is more preferable to use the one with SPF 50+. You can use it frequently to balance the Ph level and protect the skin.

6. Sunscreen for Dark Skin Tone

It is essential for people with a dark skin tone to use sunscreen on a daily basis to protect the skin from harsh sun rays. If there is an issue of white residual on the skin, opt for a tinted sunscreen to avoid it.

When and How much sunscreen should you Apply?

  • A good rule to follow for applying sunscreen is one teaspoon per body part that is exposed to the sun. Remember, if you don’t apply enough sun cream, your level of protection is reduced.
  • Always apply sunscreen 30 minutes before you’re out in the sun and top up just before.
  • Once in the sun reapply every couple of hours or immediately if you’ve been swimming or sweating – even if your sun cream claims to be water resistant.

How much does a Sunscreen Last?

Thinking about using up the sunscreen bought last year? Don’t! Most bottles last 12 to 18 months but if they’ve been exposed to high temperatures or direct sunlight, this will be reduced.
