The Best and the Craziest Looks from Met Gala 2019

359

The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute Benefit’s Gala, established in 1948 in New York City by fashion publicist Eleanor Lambert was a way to raise money for the newly founded Institute. From just a midnight dinner event to fashion’s biggest night, the Met Gala has come a long way since then.

Met Gala’s 2019 theme, Camp: Notes on Fashion, was inspired by Susan Sontag’s iconic 1964 essay, Notes on “Camp,” which describes the quintessence of camp as a sensibility that revels in artifice and exaggeration, and unnatural appearances. Keeping up with this theme, even the red carpet was made in a glorious shade of pink referring to ‘everything that is artificial and fake’.

At the Met Gala 2019, held on Monday, 6th May, this theme was translated into opulent, grand and sumptuous looks by the celebrities. Let us look at the most talked about appearances at the ‘pink’ red carpet of the evening.

Most committed to the Met Gala 2019: Lady Gaga

Oscar winner Lady Gaga was in her absolute best at the Met Gala 2019. With four different looks layered one under the other, her appearance at the red carpet was nothing less than a stage performance for her. An entire crew including designer Brandon Maxwell helped her unveil each style while she literally took out a toy phone on the red carpet as a part of her routine. She started off with a giant pink gown with a princess-bow with mile-long gold foil eyelashes, followed by a shiny black gown, a pink slip dress and finally very fancy lingerie set with embellished tights.

Glam Sisters: Kylie and Kendall Jenner

The Jenner Sisters went as each others’ dates at the Met Gala 2019 wearing Versace feathered gowns. Kendall’s Instagram said they dressed as the Wicked Sisters from Cinderella and they sure did have a ‘twinning’ vibe going on. Kendall looked stunning in her Cher-inspired sparkly orange feathered gown and Kylie went for the same in lavender while also matching her wig to her outfit. Donning deep V-necklines, sheer fabrics, and super fancy makeup, the sisters made quite an entrance at the event.

Most Dramatic at the Met Gala 2019: Cardi B

The ever-so-glamorous Cardi B showed up at the event wearing a huge quilted and feathered dark red gown by Thom Browne. She wore about ten feet of tulle and silk organza topped with 30,000 dyed feathers that required an entourage of ten people to help her walk the red carpet. Her massive train and dramatic extravaganza is what makes the Met Gala fashion’s biggest night.

What Twitter found the Funniest: Katy Perry

Singer Katy Perry lit up the red carpet as she came as a human chandelier. She always embraces the Met Gala’s theme with lots of confidence and this year, she totally outdid herself. Dressed as a giant crystal chandelier with glowing lights, she surely was the night’s most unexpected look. Designer Jeremy Scott said the gown had thousands of Swarovski crystals with a built-in corset having two hidden battery packs to illuminate the lights.

What Twitter found Most Boring: Kim Kardashian

Kim Kardashian made her entrance at the event wearing yet another tight-fitting dress. Twitterati says they are tired of Kim showing up in the same ol’ bodycon dresses. But the nude, Mugler dress was designed with dripping beads and sequins that gave the impression of Kim being drenched in water. She even had her hair styled in wet waves to match the theme of her ensemble.

Bollywood’s Prettiest at the Met Gala 2019: Deepika Padukone

Deepika Padukone looked like a real-life Disney princess in a custom Zac Posen dress at this year’s Met Gala. She stunned in a strapless gown with pink lurex jacquard, embellished with 400 3D-printed embroidery pieces. With retro hairdo, diamond earrings and oxblood lipstick, Deepika looked nothing less than the Bollywood Diva that she is.

India’s Richest at Met Gala 2019: Isha Ambani Piramal

This was Isha Ambani’s second appearance at the Met Gala and her look took our breaths away. She looked like a lilac dream in her custom Prabal Gurung gown which featured a plunging neckline with feather motifs adorning her voluminous skirt. Her gorgeous long train had embellished beadwork and designs. The dramatic bronze-hued makeup looked lavish and posh while also clinging on to a simple, minimalist vibe.

The Charismatic Royalty: Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Nick Jonas

The hit couple walked down the Met Gala 2019 red carpet yet again but this time as a married couple. Priyanka sported a Dior Haute Couture gown with colourful feathered ruffles and a matching cape. She topped off her look with Chopard pendants, frizzy hair, unconventional makeup, and a regal tall crown. Her husband, Nick Jonas wore a white Dior tux and silver Christian Louboutin shoes while wearing an ear cuff. The couple turned up as Camp royalty with Priyanka looking like she could walk right onto the set of Jonas Brothers’ ‘Sucker’ video!

Most Eye-Catching, On-theme and Startling Looks at the Met Gala 2019

Billy Porter

Billy Porter retained his red carpet royal throne by showing up in a king-like, luxurious look from the Blonds. It featured an embellished catsuit, 10-feet wings, and a 24-karat gold headpiece. He also made a grand entrance (maybe best suited for Cleopatra!) with six men dressed in gold carrying him in a black velvet couch.
