Zozibini Tunzi, 26, of South Africa, bagged the title of Miss Universe 2019 on Sunday at the beauty pageant that took place in Atlanta. She gave an outstanding performance and excelled in all the rounds, right from the swimsuit round to the Question and Answer round. Zozibini Tunzi was crowned by Catriona Gray, Miss Universe 2018 at the event.
The Answer That Won Hearts!!
The final question in the Question-Answer round that made Zozibini Tunzi win the crown was: “What is the most important thing you should be teaching young girls today?”
Oprah Winfrey tweeted to congratulate Zozibini Tunzi on her win. Her tweet said, “Congratulations Miss South Africa, the new Miss Universe @zozitunzi! Agree with you…leadership is the most powerful thing we should be teaching young women today. We welcome your visit to #OWLAG, our Leadership Academy for Girls (sic).”

Zozibini Tunzi concluded her speech by talking about ‘changing the narrative about gender stereotypes’ and empowering women.
“I grew up in a world where women who look like me with my kind of skin or my kind of hair are not considered to be beautiful, I think that it is time that this stops today. I want children to look at me and see my face, then see their faces reflected in mine,”.Zozibini Tunzi
Vartika Singh from India also participated in the pageant but couldn’t make it to the top ten.
Who is Zozibini Tunzi?
Zozibini Tunzi is the third woman from South Africa to win the title of Miss Universe.
Tunzi was born in a town called Tsolo in South Africa and was brought up in a village near her birthplace, Sidwadweni. She completed her graduation from the Cape Peninsula University of Technology with a bachelor’s degree in public relations and image management.
Zozibini has also worked as an intern in the PR department of Ogilvy in Cape Town.
Before winning this title, Zozibini Tunzi was also crowned as Miss South Africa 2019.
About the Pageant
This year the Miss Universe 2019 pageant was hosted in the Tyler Perry Studios in Atlanta, US. The event was hosted by Steve Harvey and Television personalities Vanessa Lachey and Olivia Culpo were backstage commentators. The 90 participants were judged by a panel of seven women.
The beauty pageant brought together 90 women from different countries. The two runner-ups in the competition were Miss Puerto Rico and Miss Mexico. Puerto Rico was represented by Madison Anderson and Sofía Aragón represented Mexico.
